A throw-away kitten and a dog rescued from neglect have won the coveted spots on the 2009 Fixations: His & Hers invitation and program.

Contest Judges Amy Gutmann, owner of K 9 University, and Pulitzer Prize winning Associated Press Photographer Amy Sancetta selected the cover pets on the basis of their star quality and life stories reflecting the need to reduce pet overpopulation with all its tragic consequences.

Cover Dog Ella had been severely neglected and was suffering from heartworm when she was brought to Geauga Humane Society's Rescue Village. Bebe Ober adopted her and helped her learn to trust again. Soon Bebe was the one who needed some help, and, with her family members scattered across the country, Ella became her primary caregiver. The little dog has been Bebe's constant companion through several difficult moves. Bebe and Ella now care for each other in their new home at a local assisted living facility.

Lakewood resident Tobe Northrup was heading over the Main Avenue Bridge in heavy traffic and a driving rain storm when he spotted a tiny kitten, apparently thrown from a car, struggling across the highway. He got off the freeway and circled back to find her still limping along in the middle of curb lane. After risking life and limb to scoop her up, he took her to a veterinary clinic where he was told her mangled leg would have to be amputated and asked if he wanted a three-legged cat. Tobe shrugged and showed the veterinarian his missing finger. The deal was sealed, giving the throw-away a new life filled with love and joy. According to Tobe, "B" has returned the favor — many times over.
